Effective April 1, 2012, the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will start collecting $24 per pair of license plates issued. The plate fee for single-plated vehicles is not changing.
Part of ORS 803.570 specifies that plate fees are calculated by determining the cost of manufacturing the single plate or pair of plates and rounding the cost to the next higher half-dollar. Because the DMV recently received a cost increase from its plate manufacturer, it is legally required to raise the fee to the next higher half-dollar to ensure that manufacturing costs paid for out of the Highway Fund are covered.
Transactions submitted to the DMV on or after April 1, 2012, for vehicles issued a pair of plates are subject to the new plate fee.
